The Secret To Getting Fit Without Trying

By admin • Feb 8th, 2010

Staying fit without really trying may be the Holy Grail for a lot of women, including myself, but in fact we may be nearer to having our prayers answered than we thought.

Indeed, rather than pounding the treadmill at the gym, many Britons may be getting the exercise they need simply by going about their normal daily routine.

Elin Tough, features editor at Zest, says many people mistakenly believe getting fit means changing into a tracksuit and trainers and going for a jog in the park or slogging it out at the gym.

However, this is underestimating the positive impact "incidental exercise" has on fitness levels, she explains.

"Most people probably do meet the recommended 30 minute minimum daily target without realising it just by walking to and from the train station, pacing the aisles at the supermarket and stepping out to buy lunch," she adds.

Ms Tough notes applying some light wrist and ankle weights can help women to tone up when they are dusting, vacuuming and window cleaning.

Meanwhile, gardening can also be brilliant for burning off the calories, she adds.

It seems celebrities also suffer the guilt that they should be doing more to stay fit, with Lily Allen recently telling Love Magazine when she looks in the mirror "I think I look like Michelle McManus" - the 2003 winner of Pop Idol who was reportedly dropped by her record label for being overweight.

Lily may wish to get out her weights and a duster next time she worries about her weight and watch as the pounds drop off.

Do you feel you should be getting more exercise?
