Eastenders Axes Six Characters
By admin • Apr 21st, 2010Albert Square could be set to become a less familiar place, after makers of Eastenders announced plans to axe six of the hit BBC soap’s characters.
Among those preparing to bid farewell - most likely from the back of a black taxi on route to the north, as is a favourite method of departure for many Eastenders alumni - are car mechanic Minty and student Libby Fox.
Meanwhile, cabbie Charlie Slater could ride his own taxi to a world beyond the square, while motorbike courier Danny Mitchell, student Adam Best and Libby’s grandmother Liz Turner will also be departing.
How the characters will all leave is being kept under raps but it is believed the reason for the shake up lies with new executive producer Bryan Kirkwood.
A BBC spokesperson said he is probably keen to refresh the show and make some changes.
Commenting on the news, the Guardian’s Stuart Heritage claimed there are characters who are more deserving of a cull than those who have been named, including Peter Beale who is described as the "unnecessary son of Ian".
"He needs to be written out of Eastenders before his increasingly spectacular haircut goes power mad and starts to colonise the entire set," he said, adding that Peter could also put his time away from the square to good use by visiting a doctor to find out why "his voice has been breaking for what seems like seven full years".
It was announced earlier in the year that Kat Slater and Alfie Moon are to return to the square.
