Have You Gone Mad For Glee?
By admin • Jan 26th, 2010I never thought there would come a day when young people would happily hum along to 1981 power ballad Don’t Stop Believin’, much less that it would take up two spots in the UK top ten, but it seems I have been proven wrong.
And rather than the reason for the song’s newfound popularity being a result of a Journey revival, it is actually a fictional group of high school losers which has seen the track hit the charts again.
Just weeks after the E4 launch of Glee, a show detailing the escapades of a US high school music and dance group, it’s signature song Don’t Stop Believing’ - an acapella cover of the Journey classic - had hit the top five of the UK charts, while the original was also faring well.
And Glee’s sudden success does not stop with records sales - it has also stormed this awards season.
Picking up the Golden Globe for Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy and the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series gong at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, it seems viewers and critics alike have jumped on the Glee bandwagon.
"The show’s blend of dark humour and high camp are a big part of its success, but the feel-good, serotonin-stirring songs belted out each week are also winning over even the most hardened critics," says the BBC.
So if you thought there was no way Journey would ever be cool again - if they even were in the first place - it could be time to admit you are wrong. When even Robert De Niro is rumoured to be a fan, then it is worth giving Glee a try.
