Madonna ‘Bigger Than The Beatles’
By admin • Apr 7th, 2010Madonna has received the ultimate Ray Of Light in her career by being named as the most played artist of the last decade - beating even The Beatles.
According to figures compiled by the royalties company PPL on behalf of BBC Radio 2, between 2000 and 2009 Madge enjoyed the most airplay and public performances, despite it previously being widely accepted that the Fab Four were the UK’s most played band.
While John, Paul, George and Ringo came in second to the queen of pop, the rest of the top five was rounded out by Robbie Williams, Queen and Take That.
The king of rock and roll Elvis Presley only managed eighth place and was beaten by relative newcomers the Sugababes who came in sixth, while Elton John, Abba and Coldplay also made an appearance.
Chair of PPL Fran Nevrkla described the poll as "an accurate and democratic reflection" of the most popular musicians of the last ten years.
However, it could be said that Madge, whose hits include Material Girl and Vogue, had an advantage over some of the other stars making up the top ten, as half of The Beatles, along with Elvis and Freddie Mercury, are no longer around to boost their back catalogue with new material or head out on tour.
Meanwhile, it was suggested earlier in the week that Madonna may have fallen out with her long time friend Gwyneth Paltrow after the actress said in an interview with Vogue magazine: "I’m having a situation right now with a friend where I’m feeling pretty angry."
