Can you bag a designer dress on the cheap?
By admin • Nov 17th, 2009This Christmas, women may be able to bag themselves a designer wardrobe akin to the likes of Victoria Beckham, Cheryl Cole and Sarah Jessica Parker - and all without having to break the bank.
"Impossible", you may be thinking, but in fact, the latest designer gown does not have to be an unrealistic dream for women without the budget of a WAG, movie star or singer.
Instead, ladies could turn up to this year’s round of Christmas parties wearing an exclusive and designer outfit, simply by renting a frock, rather than buying it.
And by taking such action, it could mean that even in these credit crunched times, Brits are able to take a style leaf out of Victoria Beckham’s book by never being seen in the same outfit twice.
Anna Bance is the founder of Girl Meets Dress, an online boutique which allows you to borrow the latest designer dresses, making it the ultimate in recession dressing.
"I thought wouldn’t it be wonderful if all women had access to this same service - the option and freedom to fall in love with a catwalk look, borrow it for a day, then return it to its rightful owner. The luxury to borrow something really special again, again and again [...] on demand at a fraction of the price," she explains.
Ms Bance adds that this means women can look like they have stepped straight off the runway, without spending a fortune to accumulate a wardrobe which quickly becomes outdated.
And as fashion changes so swiftly, with something which is very much in today, dressing the charity shop window tomorrow, expensive designer dresses no longer have to gather dust once they have past their shelf life, but can instead be handed back to their owners, in favour of something more on-trend.
Furthermore, renting designer gear could see ladies being able to find something for all different types of event - from a family wedding to an office Christmas party to a posh meal out with the boyfriend or husband.
And simple, economical outfits could also be given a new lease of life by adding a number of classic designer staples, such as some Chanel jewellery or Jimmy Choos.
But it is not only Ms Bance who has seen an opening for such a service.
According to a recent article in Drapers, Topshop has secured dress donations from celebrities such as Kate Moss and Dita Von Teese to create its charity initiative Dress Me Up.
And Mintel has also reported that online clothing rental company Rent The Runway offers designer clothing hot off the catwalk to label loving, but possibly cash-strapped women.
Designers in Rent the Runway’s catwalk wardrobe include Herve Leger, Proenza Schouler and Catherine Malandrino and each outfit rental costs ten per cent of the retail price.
So women looking for the perfect Christmas outfit to ensure all eyes are on them could now look like they have stepped off the screen of the Sex And The City movie - all the while with money left in their handbags to see them keeping their Cosmopolitan glasses topped up all night.
Although, dressed in such glamorous clobber, they may not have to fork out as these ladies are sure to be inundated with men offering to fill their glass.
Would you hire a designer dress or would you prefer to save up and buy one for yourself?

While shopping if you notice a pair of jeans or a top which catches your imagination you should buy it immediately. Do not leave it for later as you may not get that next time. So will not need to regret it.
