Get Ready For Festival Summer
By admin • Apr 27th, 2010It used to be hippies who had no fear of going without a shower for a week who swarmed to music festivals every summer, but in the last few years all of that has changed and the outdoor events are now full to bursting with fashionistas.
Indeed, the question is no longer what festival you are going to, but how many events do you have tickets for this summer.
With Glastonbury already sold out and even tickets for some of the smaller boutique festivals going quickly, girls in the know may have snapped up their passes months ago.
However, that still leaves one dilemma - how to fit an entire summer wardrobe into one small rucksack.
Luckily, help is at hand from Oonagh Brennan, fashion director at Company magazine, who knows all the items a girl will need to put together the perfect, festival-friendly capsule wardrobe.
While ladies may be hoping for sun at whatever festival they attend this year, it is still worth packing a coat as the evenings can be cold, and Ms Brennan recommends a khaki green parka as the "essential" cover-up.
She adds: "You are living in a tent and you can pile anything on and it just kind of works quite eclectically.
"Skinny jeans are a really big trend but I think we will see loads of denim shorts. That’s a really big trend this summer – with thick socks and boots that’s a really cool look and then your parka thrown over."
Skinny jeans and denim shorts are perfect for capsule packing as they can be dressed up or down for the day or evening by adding a summer dress or sequins, Ms Brennan explains.
Meanwhile, when going to a music event, showing off your musical allegiance in a new or vintage T-shirt is a big yes and can help to create a rocky look with a glamorous edge.
In terms of footwear, no respectable festival-goer would be without their trusty wellies but if ladies are lucky enough to have a few days of sun then gladiator sandals are still proving popular, while teaming chunky boots with a maxi dress is the perfect way of disguising unshaved legs.
For accessories, the Guardian’s Jess Cartner-Morley recently stated that boho is making a big comeback, advising ladies to be on the lookout for feather earrings and beading.
Finally, for the brave woman who wants to take the 80s and 90s style revival all the way, Ms Brennan recommends a bumbag, which can allow attendees to keep all of the valuables safely on them, while leaving their arms free to enjoy the music.
With fashion-favourites Kate Moss and Alexa Chung both regular festival attendees, there really is no reason why you should leave your fashion credentials at home.
Are you going to a festival this year?
