SATC Takes On The Big Apple
By admin • May 18th, 2010Watching Sex and the City, it’s easy to come to the conclusion that New York is by far the most stylish city in the world, with men and women alike clad in designer labels, sashaying down the sidewalk as though it were a catwalk.
However, in reality, even residents of the Big Apple occasionally turn to the SATC ladies for a spot of style inspiration.
Indeed, Lizanne Harris, fashion director at Stylist, says that the majority of New Yorkers do not see fashion as the most important aspect of their lives and instead choose a utilitarian wardrobe that fits around their day-to-day activities.
When it comes to careers and lifestyles, she claims that there is somewhat of a survival instinct and drive to succeed in the city, which comes across in the way its residents dress.
However, all this is not to say that the SATC television series and later movie have not had an impact on wardrobe choices in New York. Indeed, Ms Harris predicts that the forthcoming film in the franchise is likely to drive a number of looks.
"I think the biggest trend is probably the revival of Halston as a fashion house, which really had its heyday in the 70s. Although they relaunched a while ago, it was really only people who were in the know about fashion who appreciated this. It put it into the spotlight for mass fashion," she says.
According to the Telegraph, Halston features extensively in the new film’s trailer, which may in no small part be because the movie’s star Sarah Jessica Parker is the label’s new creative consultant.
In the new movie, Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte are set to head for a girls only break in Abu Dhabi - although the scenes were filmed in Morocco - and Ms Harris claims that this side of the story is likely to "definitely" ignite an ethnic, bohemian, desert chic trend.
Sex and the City will hit UK cinemas on May 28th and so far, excited fans of the franchise have only had the trailers to whet their appetite and tease them with what the four girls are likely to experience on their latest outing.
Clues offered in the trailers include a possible wedding, where Carrie’s long time GBF Stanford is thought to be groom and Liza Minnelli is seen entertaining the guests. Carrie’s hubby Big is also seen apparently flirting with Penelope Cruz, leading her to confide in Samantha that her marriage is losing its "sparkle".
Meanwhile, Charlotte is seen struggling with the pressures of bringing up two young girls, with all of the women’s stresses prompting them to take their exotic break.
It is while in Abu Dhabi that the film’s twist occurs, as Carrie bumps into her former fiance Aidan. Whether she has a holiday fling with her ex, leaves Big or stays true to her marriage all remains to be seen, as the cast and crew are believed to have signed contracts pledging not to give away any details.
