The Fashions That Made The Decade
By admin • Dec 22nd, 2009Skinny jeans, Uggs, It bags and boho are all style items which helped to create the fashions of the Noughties - but rather than the big fashion houses, it has been celebrities which helped to kick-start these trends.
Francesca Moser, senior fashion assistant at SHE magazine, said the influence of the TV and media world will be looked back upon as the "main phenomena" which characterised the style ups and downs of the decade.
"Sarah Jessica Parker and the famous Sex and the City series had a massive impact on the modern society, as well as trend-setting celebrities like Sienna Miller and her boho chic, alongside TV programmes like The OC and Gossip Girl which brought the preppy and geek chic looks to the trends forefront from 2006 onwards," she explained.
Away from the small screen, Ms Moser noted celebrities including Kate Moss made their own style available to the masses by launching their own, affordable fashion ranges at high street shops, such as Topshop, H&M and New Look.
Filmstars, singers and celebrities have all had a strong influence on this decade’s followers of fashion, she stated, with Lady Gaga, Cheryl Cole, Victoria and David Beckham all becoming style icons.
Boho and gypsy, Juicy Couture tracksuits, florescent New Rave, bling hip hop, Uggs and skinny jeans are all trends which are likely to sum up the last ten years when people look back on the decade.
And while some girls rushed to get their teeth whitened, hair extensions put in and fake tan topped up, others took style advice from the spate of Vampire films, including Twilight, and embraced the pale and interesting, rock-goth look.
Meanwhile, Belinda White, fashion director at handbag.com, said skinny jeans have been one of the most popular trends of the decade, although she never thought women would find a style they favoured over their trusty boot-leg jeans.
She added that It bags like the Marc Jacobs Stam and the Chloe Paddington will also be remembered, with a new style out every season.
Fashion misses of the Noughties included Uggs and the cheaper knitted versions of the boots, which Ms White stated "became a symbol of naffness", while she also described boho as "bleurgh".
Indeed, she went as far as to say she has held a grudge against Sienna Miller since the emergence of the trend.
Going into the new decade, Ms Moser suggested the rock look was likely to stay in vogue, as are "dreaded jeggings" - jeans so tight they are verging on leggings.
It remains to be seen what the trends of the next decade will be, or who will emerge as an icon of style, but due to the fact that in the last year, Lady Gaga - with her leotards, drag-queen make-up and hair bows made from her own peroxide barnet - has become a fashion hero, it would seem anything is possible.
Who has been your style icon of the last decade?
