Time To Stop Waiting For Mr Right?
By admin • Jan 26th, 2010The British singleton, made famous in the novel and film Bridget Jones’ Diary, could soon become a thing of the past, after one author has advised women in their 30s to give up their search for Mr Right.
While Bridget successfully bagged her Mr Right in the form of Mark Darcy - having quite a lot of fun along the way - if women in their 30s have not had such luck they should begin looking for a Mr Second Best to settle down with, Lori Gottlieb has claimed in her book Marry Him: The Case For Settling For Mr Good Enough.
Indeed, she goes as far as to claim that women who are still dedicated in looking for their perfect man could be setting up a lonely life for themselves and states it is literature, movies and television programmes which falsely suggest The One is waiting for us all.
In order to make sure a secure and happy life with family is yours, Ms Gottlieb is urging you to pay more attention to that man who may have shown interest in you but who you discounted as he didn’t tick all the boxes.
"My advice is this: Settle! That’s right. Don’t worry about passion or intense connection. Don’t nix a guy based on his annoying habit of yelling ‘Bravo!’ in movie theatres," she says.
However, it seems many women are not ready to take her advice and throw in the towel just yet.
The Telegraph’s Becky Pugh points to Sex And The City’s Carrie Bradshaw, a woman unwilling to settle even for the kind and steady Aidan, who waited years to find lasting love with her Mr Right - Mr Big.
Ms Pugh calls Ms Gottlieb’s comments "absurd" and claims what ladies really want is love, warmth and an emotional connection with a man - all things which do exist and can last a lifetime.
She adds women would not put up with mediocrity from their government, their job or their friendships, so why should they settle for it in marriage.
But what of the woman who took Bridget Jones to the big screen, Renee Zellweger?
On occasion it seemed as though life was mimicking art, as Renee notched up a marriage and a number of failed relationships.
However, the 40-year-old star is now rumoured to have found love with actor Bradley Cooper. And if Bridget Jones can do it, there’s hope for us all.
Have you stopped searching for your Mr Right?
