There could be no time like the present to do so, particularly for people who might expect nail varnish to join the metallic pastels trend seen in other areas of make-up.
Heather Steele, head of marketing and product development at nail bar chain nails inc, warns that metallic pastels can look "insipid" on the nails.
Instead, she predicts that ice cream colours are likely to prove popular into the new year.
Rather than looking insipid, these offer a brighter - but still pastel-coloured - appearance to the hands.
As the year progresses, fashion could get brighter still, with neon predicted to make a comeback during the warmer months.
The nail expert explains that neon is a perennial favourite that could have fashionistas nationwide going crazy during the summer of 2010.
She adds that the trend could be boosted further by the aesthetic appeal of bright neon against dark tanned skin.
Ms Steele reveals that nails inc’s own colours for the coming spring season include a pale blue, muted lilacs and a "really gorgeous" shade of pistachio ice-cream green.
