When Shopping Is More Than A Hobby
By admin • Apr 13th, 2010Most women would admit to having a slightly unhealthy obsession with clothes and shoes, but for some, shopping is rapidly becoming more than a hobby.
Spurred on by films such as Sex and the City, ladies are keen to look their best and stand out from the crowd by forking out large sums to create the best wardrobe possible.
Karen Pine, author of Sheconomics and professor of psychology at the University of Hertfordshire, said spending money can serve as an important psychological function for females, claiming that many ladies she had interviewed had admitted that shopping helped to relieve feelings of stress and depression.
With this in mind, it appears as though hitting the shops is something women do to relieve their emotions rather than simply stock up their wardrobes.
And it is not just clothes shopping that helps in this way, with many ladies still largely responsible for carrying out the household shop on a regular basis, even if they are holding down a full-time job.
"Women, historically, have taken responsibility for acquiring food and household items for the home and family. This has evolved into a social activity and many women use the experience as a chance to meet with friends while they check out what’s on offer," Ms Pine explained.
Her comments are supported by recent research by OnePoll, which found that the average woman will spend more than eight years of her life shopping both for herself and the family.
How much time do you spend shopping?
